Honey Bxby Reveals What Incited Her Crash Out Anthem "LEFT EYE"
If you're ever feeling a little bit like Left Eye, Honey Bxby has some advice.
Rising R&B singer Honey Bxby channeled her inner Lisa Lopes for her love and vengeance cut “LEFT EYE,” and gathered her home girls to accomplish a mission of window-smashing destruction for its music video.
The song is an obvious ode to the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of TLC, who burned down the home of her then boyfriend, Andre Rison, after she found out he was cheating on her.
“It's like everybody has somebody or had somebody that drives them so crazy that makes them want to do irrational sh*t,” the New Jersey native told me about the source of inspiration for the song. “That’s what ‘LEFT EYE’ is like. You make me want to do irrational sh*t.”
Fair.
The song was produced by Worldwide Fresh and samples Mobb Deep classic “Quiet Storm.” However, originally, she did not want to record it.
“I don't want to sample anything,” she recalled telling her team. “I don't want to do a known…New York sample.”
That quickly changed after she heard what her team was working on.
“They were working on a crash out anthem,” she said of her initial reaction to hearing the song. “I was like, well, I'm a known crash out. I'm a known chaotic b*tch. So, sh*t, f*ck it. Let's just go with it! We all were thinking about crash out sh*t. What would you do if somebody did this?”
When I asked her if she had any advice for anyone feeling a little bit like Left Eye, she gave some sound advice — like making sure you have your ride-or-die with you, but be smart and don't end up in jail.
“Don't do anything that's going to be detrimental to your life,” she said.
While Honey’s “LEFT EYE” is filled with the want for retribution, it’s not indicative of what her upcoming project Raw Honey will sound like.
“Don't base the project off ‘LEFT EYE,’” she urged. “I feel like people are expecting that one sound and that's not what you're gonna get. But you're not gonna be disappointed.”
But before that, Honey said she plans to drop her next single “Right On Time” Feb. 21.
Fans can also expect to catch her on tour with SAINt JHN for his Festival Season Tour, which kicks off in March.
